The following request was emailed to the Island requesting a compatible bone marrow match

Hi there I am a bone marrow transplant nurse looking after a lady from St Helena in Southampton General Hospital. She desperately needs a bone marrow transplant however we have been unable to find her a donor.

We have looked all over the world on the official unrelated donor registries. I am looking into the possibility of trying to find her a donor from St Helena who lives in the UK.

There is a higher probability we will find a match if we are able to test people from St Helena. It is very difficult to test people who live on the island but i know there are people in Swindon who come from St Helena originally and i hope they may be able to help. Please get back to me if you think that your organisation can be of assisstance.
Anyone who thinks they might help needs to join the Anthony Nolan Register. they can do so from this link http://www.anthonynolan.org/register it is really easy, just a short questionnaire. once they have done this and their application has been processed they will get in the post a ‘spit kit’ so that their tissue type can be tested. Then they will be on the register and might be able to help my patient.

If anyone would like to speak to someone from the Anthony Nolan about this they can contact Karen Archer by emailing karen.archer@anthonynolan.org she will be able to answer
any questions people have about the process.

There is also loads of information on the Anthony Nolan website http://www.anthonynolan.org/

Time is of the essence so please let everyone know we need to try and find someone for this lady as soon as we can.

St Helena wants help to get faster broadband

9 02 2012

It was brought to my attention today that the People of St Helena is not expressing a lot of interest in having faster broadband and I often wonder why.

Every internet user would like to have better speed when it comes to a broadband connection.

I was having a look at the www.connectsthelena.org and the amount of interest and support that has been shown on the campaign to get a faster data link is quite low.

I am also a bit concern that Saints living abroad are not supporting the Island and its campaign either.

One of the things to bear in mind if your friends and family on Island has a better broadband connection then this means an easier way to communicate this could also bring you closer to your Island.

Imagine a teenager growing up on St Helena who has never seen a utube video or listened to a pod case and has never experienced and online gaming session.

Most people on the Island cannot stay on Facebook for no more than 10 minutes a day because one they cannot afford the internet and also was only able to scroll slowly through Facebook book because of the speed of the internet.

Today I saw another article that was written in the press about St Helena and what could be achieved with a better broad band connection. It could be found here. http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fportuguese%2Fnoticias%2F2012%2F02%2F120208_ilha_cabosubmarino_is.shtml&act=url

What could a faster internet do for you and fellow friends on the Island

Cruise boat visit

27 01 2012

Yesterday St Helena saw the visit of the cruise ship Seaborne Quest.

The Seaborne quest arrived in James bay around 8 AM with 380 passengers on board.

The weather was warm and this made it very successful day.

Various stalls were setup in Jamestown and Longwood to sell local souvenirs to the tourist.

The comments from the tourist were very positive said tourist director Mike Dean

The next cruise ship visit is on Sunday 29th January

Credits to Bruce Salt for the photograph – If you require a digital photo service on the Island feel free to let us know we will forward you the details for the photographer.

St Helena this week

26 01 2012

What is there to report from St Helena This week

One of the subjects that is gaining some interest online is the connect St Helena website www.connectsthelena.org.

There are several comments on the Facebook page some of which are constructive some of which are just odd non constructive comments ?????

The weather has been really great last week and hopefully it will continue as we have some Cruise ships on the horizon.

One of our councillors is currently in Brussels representing the Island at an EU meeting hopefully there will be some knowledge sharing when he returns.

St Helena Government has promised to stream line the process for the application for workers who are employed by Basil Read (The Airport Contractor) but SHG won’t be granting any special privileges but would make a quicker management of the process for the workers by HM customs.

Basil Read will also begin extracting rock from an open quarry in Rupert’s Valley and this will be used for the temporary Jetty at Rupert’s Bay.

We will add more as it happens don’t forget to visit us at www.clickonsthelenaisland.com we have not seen a lot of input to our discussion forum http://www.clickonsthelenaisland.com/front/forum/index.php

We would like to see more interest any ideas to get it kick started would be good

Who wants to go to an island where iPhones don't work?

Reblogged from St Helena Online:

St Helena’s dismal internet connection will deter people from travelling to the island when its airport is built, according to a telecoms blogger in Germany.

Martin Sauter, “a thought leader” in the industry, is aghast that St Helena’s 4,000 residents have to share a broadband connection that has less than half the bandwidth of his own connection at home.

He lends his voice to a campaign to route a new undersea high-speed cable via St Helena.
